Cynthia Dawn Constantine, age 15, vanished from Oakdale, New York on July 11, 1969.

Cynthia was last seen by her family when she left her home to take the dog for a walk along the railroad tracks.  The dog returned, still on its leash, but Cynthia was not with the dog.  Her brother stated he believed she may have gone into the woods, as they’d gone earlier in the day and had seen a muskrat hole.  Cynthia was reportedly interested in going back to search for the muskrat.

Police were notified when she didn’t return home.  Three small boys told authorities that they’d seen Cynthia and her dog entering the woods.  Cynthia’s brother led their parents and police to the location of the muskrat hole.  They observed tracks consistent with Cynthia and her dog, but then it began to rain and the tracks were washed away before they could be scrutinized.

Cynthia’s father was the owner of a well known bicycle shop which adjoined their home.

Someone who lived in the area recalls hearing a rumor, initiated by a homeless man, that a girl had been abducted, taken into the woods, and murdered.  The person who posted about this said that the person the story was first told to didn’t take it seriously, as she was unaware of Cynthia’s disappearance at the time. (This occurred long after she had gone missing.)

Another individual claiming to be a local private investigator recounts his investigation into her disappearance.  He learned that a business owner very near where Cynthia was last seen turned out to be a sexual predator who was also involved in an illegal abortion ring.  He claims that this person fled to Mexico, and that the people who took over his building found abortion tools and pornography hidden in the walls.

Another local recalls a creepy limousine driver who was known to follow kids.  It’s not clear if he is the same person mentioned by the private investigator.  This local also recalls a man that the kids called “Diaperman” as he would run around the woods in white underpants.  He was believed to live with his mom in a nearby senior citizens community.

The area she went missing from is also across from the Oakdale station of the Long Island Railroad, which means Cynthia could have encountered any number of people who were not local or familiar.

Cynthia’s parents are now deceased, her brother is still alive.  Cynthia’s father had expressed that he didn’t believe Cynthia had gotten far at all, as the dog returned within a few minutes.

Cynthia was reportedly a quiet girl without a large circle of friends.  She had many pets, and was dedicated to caring for the animals.  Her rabbits were about to have babies when she vanished, something she was very excited about.

Although her family could not fathom Cynthia running away, there was a glimmer of hope when a girl resembling her was photographed at a Friends of Animals protest.  The girl in the photograph has never been identified.

  1. A very sad story.
I was a year younger, and probably went to the same school as Cynthia, but neither I nor my friends remember hearing about her disappearance. Today parents would lock kids up after something like this, but back then none of us were told to not go into the woods. Maybe it was a different time or maybe because we were boys.
