Theresa Kawash, age 36, vanished from Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on July 4, 1982.

According to Theresa’s then husband, Edward Kawash, he and the couple’s nine year old daughter left the house on the morning of Theresa’s disappearance.  Edward claimed that although he hadn’t actually seen Theresa prior to leaving, he heard her call their daughter into her room at about 7:50am. He stated that he and their daughter returned home late that afternoon, and Theresa was gone.

Theresa’s vehicle, a gold Datsun 280Z, was also gone and has never been found.  Edward said that he had seen the car parked in the garage when he left earlier that morning.

Initially, no one was concerned.  Theresa had planned to meet friends at 5:00 that afternoon, and the group was supposed to go to a fireworks display later in the evening.  However, her friends said she never showed up, and felt this was not typical of Theresa’s behavior.

Theresa and Edward were in the process of divorce when she disappeared.  Although they resided in the same house, they led separate lives and did not communicate with each other unless it pertained to their child.

The division of assets from their divorce had already been agreed upon, but a decision on custody of their daughter was still pending; the next court date was scheduled for about a month after Theresa vanished.

Theresa was involved with another man, and was planning to marry him and move to Norway once the divorce was final.   She wanted to take their daughter with her, but Edward, who was also in another relationship, was fighting this.

Theresa enjoyed sewing Victorian dresses and costumes, and hunting for antiques.  She was a talented beautician, who had worked at one of Edward Kawash’s salons prior to their marriage.  She was the oldest of eight children, and maintained regular contact with her family until she vanished.

Her family members did not believe she left of her own accord, without her daughter.
